Kerry wants to put me out of business!

And part of that leadership is sending the right message to places like North Korea. Right now the president is spending hundreds of millions of dollars to research bunker-busting nuclear weapons. The United States is pursuing a new set of nuclear weapons. It doesn't make sense. You talk about mixed messages. We're telling other people, "You can't have nuclear weapons," but we're pursuing a new nuclear weapon that we might even contemplate using.

Not this president. I'm going to shut that program down, and we're going to make it clear to the world we're serious about containing nuclear proliferation.

Thirty-some years later and they're still pissed at the French Candidate

Go read this moving account of the pain Kerry's treasonous post-Viet Nam Senate testimony still causes.

Missing American Found Alive

I heard his voice on the radio at the top of the hour news on KCMO.

Yes, John Edwards is ALIVE! He has been missing and presumed held captive since the Democratic convention.

The communique mentions over 1,000 dead in Iraq so it may have been taped as early as two weeks ago. I imagine that Secret Service agents are going over the tapes for clues as to Edwards whereabouts.

John Kerry, Once a Traitor, Always a Traitor

Ok, so Allawi comes to the US and seeks to buck up world support. He adresses a joint session of Congress and where is Mr. Mom? In a firehouse in OHIO! Why didn't the wuss resign his Senate seat so that someone could represent Massachusetts besides the other poster boy for the Bay State, Tedward.

Kerry must have extraordinary powers of perception. He managed to know more about the situation in Iraq than Allawi, who is on the ground fighting the good fight.

Shortly after Allawi, the interim government's prime minister, gave a rosy portrayal of progress toward peace in Iraq, Kerry said the assessment contradicted reality on the ground.

How pray tell is Mr. fancy pants, I went to Swiss boarding schools and Daddy was a diplomat, going to recruit allies for the US if he keeps shitting all over our friends?

Kerry Throws in Towel in Missouri

It was reported in the news today that the so-called "Kerry campaign" is cancelling a large ad buy in Missouri. I am ecstatic. This can't be good for Claire either since it will help to depress Democratic turnout. Heck, if I were a Dem and Kerry were running, I'd be on suicide watch.

In a similar vein, I was at the Johnson County Republican Headquarters this afternoon talking to some very fine people and they told me that the national campaign is not allocating any money for B/C '04 yardsigns. I think this is bad for Chris Kobach since we need to get folks excited about voting for GOP winners this year and big GOP turnout will help defeat incumbent Democrat Dennis Moore.

I'm just wild about Tu-RAY-zu

I am so happy that both W and Laura and John and Tuh-RAY-zu are both going on Dr. Phil. I think that every time she opens her mouth, Kerry loses ground to Bush.

Witness:
The exchange goes like this:
12 News Reporter: Most of the polls are tracking that Sen John Kerry as doing a better job on the economy. My question is, why hasn’t that transferred overall in the poll numbers?

Teresa: It has, of course. Of course it has.

Reporter: He’s still down.

Teresa: He’s not. Did you see the polls today? You saw Zogby and ARG —

Reporter: Yes, but he’s still down in Arizona.

Teresa: Oh, who cares? You know, one state is not a whole state. In the whole United States, he is even, even, and in some of them one point ahead, and in some one point behind.

Her "Oh, who cares" is just about the most priceless moment of this campaign. No matter what else happens this campaign, I have to thank the voters of Iowa for making sure we got to experience this absolutely perfect moment.
(sigh) Why not tell the whole state to “shove it”, while you’re at it?

This just in Kerry is Toast

IEM 2004 US Presidential Election Winner Takes All Market Price Graph

In case you don't know about the Iowa Electronic Markets, it is an honest to goodness futures market where you can buy a contract that pays you a dollar if Kerry wins and another contract that pays you a dollar if Bush wins. Kerry's price got to be so low that they split the contracts to include vote percentage.

Translation probability of Bush win is .63 or thereabouts.

CBS, the Democrats, Kerry, and the French.

I hope Kerry is leading the Democrats into a rout of Modale-like proportions. Kerry thinks any coalition that doesn't have France is just not a fitting coalition. Earth to KERRY, they aren't our friends.

Telegraph | News | Agent behind fake uranium documents worked for France: "Italian diplomats have claimed that, by disseminating bogus documents stating that Iraq was trying to buy low-grade 'yellowcake' uranium from Niger, France was trying to 'set up' Britain and America in the hope that when the mistake was revealed it would undermine the case for war, which it wanted to prevent."

John Kerry, I knew JFK, you're no JFK.

"

The real John F. Kennedy hated communism. Bobby worked for freakin' McCarthy.

John Kerry, the French Looking Cadidate

The Canadian Paper, The National Post, exposes JEAN Frickin' Kerry as an incompetent diplomat.

Half of Europe is leaning to Kerry. But it's the wrong half

Kerry is oblivious to all this. In particular, he seems not to realize that he and his fellow Democrats have been repeatedly insulting the 15 European countries in the U.S.-led Iraq coalition. Although they include some of the leading military powers in the EU and NATO, they were dismissed at the Boston convention as "countries you can buy on eBay." That kind of thing rankles at least as much as Donald Rumsfeld's "Old Europe" -- and it annoys America's friends rather than its rivals.

If you ever do want to order an Australian book.

Welcome to Dymocks Online. More for Booklovers.

Modern Miracles

I just bought a book from an English magician over the web. Amazing. In a couple of weeks a book that I read about on a website will appear magically at my house and a bill in US dollars will appear on my Visa bill. This is just so cool.

Oh, and I bought a couple of books from an Australian author over a website that must be the Aussie equivalent of Amazon. Yes I checked Zon first and they didn't have it. Again, currency translation handled seamlessly.

I'll report on the exchange rates that I get when I finally get my bill. I imagine that the rate will be competitive. When I used my ATM card in Canada a few years ago, BoA was very much superior to the local merchants.

Here is a neat foriegn currency calculator if you are doing some foreign purchases.

Armour Hills

While researching a true crime story, I came upon a story in the KC Star Millenium series that mentioned the building of the subdivision in which I shared a house with my ex for 22 years, Armour Hills.

J.C. Nichols, developer of Mission Hills and the prestigious Sunset Hill near the Kansas City Country Club (today's Loose Park), also turned his attention to the expanding middle class.
In 1922 he filed a plat for a new subdivision south of 65th Street. Armour Hills, he called it.

There, on the former grazing land of Kirkland Armour's Hereford herd, Nichols built more moderately priced houses along streets with familiar names: Oak, Main, Brookside and the curving Edgevale Road, which lent to the bungalows and two-stories in Armour Hills "the same characteristics of beauty and distinction" that prevailed in the nearby but pricier Country Club District.

"In efficiency and livability, these houses take first rank," said the J.C. Nichols Co., which advertised bungalows for $8,500 and two-stories for as low as $9,500. "There are fine big yards for the little tots' sand pile or the grown-ups' croquet court and abundant space for flowers."

By summer 1924 more than 300 families had bought homesites.

That July, with construction starting every day on three or four houses, Nichols dedicated the 1.1-acre Arbor Villa Park at 66th Terrace and Main Street. The pergola was draped in American flags that evening as Judge John I. Williamson, a new Armour Hills homeowner, stood and praised the new park as "an innovation in residential development" and a "distinct asset to Kansas City." The judge called special attention to the beautiful Venetian vase of Carraran marble and the park's other statuary.

Though the judge did not mention it, Armour Hills, like its wealthier Nichols' neighbors, had deed restrictions that forbade ownership or occupancy by black people.

Such restrictions, historian William S. Worley writes, were not unique to Kansas City. Pricey developments elsewhere in the United States -- such as Roland Park in Baltimore and Forest Hills in Queens, New York -- barred Jews and Catholics as well as people of African descent. To Nichols, who had seen Quality Hill deteriorate as wealthy residents moved out, deed restrictions were a way to ensure that property retained its value.

In fact, company records indicate that Nichols developed Armour Hills -- and restricted its land use and ownership -- as a way to safeguard property values in the nearby and costlier properties along Ward Parkway and Sunset Drive. "Had this land fallen into the possession of disinterested owners or had it been developed without restrictions," the records say, the "stability and character" of the Country Club District -- and Kansas City -- would have "suffered."

The $8,500 bungalow appraised at over $180,000 when we split. By my calculations, the rate of price increase was only about 4% a year. I'm not sure what the inflation adjusted return is but it is probably only 1%. It's negative if you throw in taxes. Think of this the next time some realtor tells you that real estate is an "investment."

It is still a pretty house, though.
